Youth Media Conference, Expo & Showcase

Thursday, April 16 | 9:30AM - 3:00PM | VANCITY THEATRE

This year we have a focus on digital literacy, with a panel, interactive presentations, a Behind the Scenes Expo, a program of short films, and the Youth Filmmakers Showcase. As responsible digital citizens, students must acquire digital literacy skills that include the ability to create and share messages, using language, graphic design, sound, and moving images. Developing these skills is invaluable for participating in our communities, culture, and the media landscape. The 3rd annual R2R Youth Media Conference is designed to inspire young people to become creators, and will equip them with the tools to engage in constructive critique.

Digital Literacy Panel
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Emily Carr University educators, Janos Sitar and Jody Baker will screen and critique popular uploads from YouTube. Students will meet (in person or via Skype) the masterminds behind YouTube channels, such as: Ask a SlaveAnimal Wonders, and Convos With My 2-Year-Old. This will be two hours of energetic discussion, laughter and critical thinking. Students will be provided the opportunity to become more active watchers and more thoughtful creators.

Behind the Scenes Expo*
12:20 PM & 1:40 PM

Representatives from Vancouver’s film industry will talk with students about the range of opportunities, from sound design and make-up to visual effects and location scouting. Participants include VFX companies (Double Negative, Digital Domain, Method Studios), animation and CGI companies (Rainmaker, DHX Media, Bardel Entertainment), post-secondary schools (UBC, Emily Carr, VanArts, Langara, The Art Institute Vancouver, VFS), a sound design company (Rukkus House), unions/guilds (Union of BC Performers, IATSE 669 Cinematographers Guild, Canadian Media Producers Association), and more. Incentives will be provided to students to encourage a visit to all booths. If you’re interested in art, sound, screenwriting, computer programming, or video games, this event is for you!

Conflict and Resolution*
12:20 PM & 1:40 PM

Life is full of conflict, but it is how we deal with it that makes us who we are. These films celebrate the capacity of people to connect with each other across religious, racial, class and generational differences. Using humour and imagination, the protagonists find strength and common ground in the face of adversity and intolerance

Themes: sexual identity, conflict, religion, overcoming obstacles, abuse, friendship, and resilience in the face of adversity

Note: Filmmakers for StandStill, Colour of Our Feathers  and Anatomy of Assistance wil be in attendence.

*Students attending the 12:20 PM Conflict and Resolution screening will participate in the Behind the Scenes Expo at 1:40 PM. Students participating in the Behind the Scenes Expo at 12:20 PM will attend the Conflict and Resolution screening at 1:40 PM. The program activities end at 3:00 PM. However, students are welcome to attend the Youth Filmmakers Showcase at 4:00 PM. Please confirm when registering.

7th Annual Youth Filmmakers Showcase
4:00 PM - 6:00 PM (optional addition, please let us know by April if your pre-registered students will stay for this screening)

Films made by youth highlight the quality of emerging talent in BC. Ranging from the political to personal, these films speak to the technical abilities and storytelling skills of the young directors, editors, actors, and the camera, lighting, VFX and sound designers of tomorrow. This program is sure to inspire students to pick up a camera.

Are you a young filmmaker? This is your chance to show us what you can do with a camera, your imagination and maybe a little help from your friends. A jury of film industry professionals will select and deliberate on the finalists and winners. There will be a networking event after the screening and awards presentation. This is an opportunity to ask questions of professionals working in the industry. Meet and connect with other youth filmmakers, activists, and artists who are as passionate as you are.

All participants are encouraged to attend the Behind the Scenes Expo prior to the showcase and are invited as guests of R2R to the networking event after the YFS awards presentation. The jury will be on hand to provide one-on-one feedback to participating filmmakers.

Note: Regular submissions closed on January 25. However, for educators submitting on behalf of students, extensions may be granted upon request.
